Developing Your Story

Like all narratives, screenplays have many phases of development. Whatever phase you are currently in, we can asses your next steps. We will identify what is working in your story. We will also look at areas that could be further developed by using a customized approach. Our intention is to assist you to bring forth the ultimate vision of your story.

You need to present yourself, your business or your ideas to a group of people. This can be a daunting task. Getting your audience’s attention is the first priority. You will also need to feel well-grounded and present within yourself. And then, not only give your talk, but also make a lasting impression. The two watch words for this kind of writing are authenticity and congruency. This work is about using language that is congruent with how you naturally talk. This writing process can look more like an outline or bullet points, rather than highly structured sentences. Our work together is accomplished primarily on your feet, speaking your talk out loud.

You want your book to make the impact you desire. We will assess, then work with different approaches to make your story lift off the page. We will work with these classic story telling tools as a way to develop your narrative: How your story unspools; the through-line that holds your story together; the rising and falling action; pacing; character development; digging into scenes, searching for nuanced behaviors; the obstacles and problems being set up for your main characters, so that they can transform, or not. Working with these and other techniques will be a very liberating experience for you as a writer.

If your story is to be performed in front of an audience or filmed, then your story will need a development process. Besides the basic narrative techniques, we will address a wide variety of concerns. Who makes up your core audience? What is your ideal venue? What is this show really about? What else might be possible in your story? And so much more. We then explore what is next in your ongoing creative process.

This is one story that only you can tell, because it is your story. Your story will hold your points of view, your inner most thoughts and feelings, which ultimately will lead to your revelations. At the heart of this kind of storytelling is memory - what you remember, what the others remember. And somewhere in the mix of all this, is the truth. Your core emotional truth will be on display for the world. This kind of writing takes an open mind and a depth of curiosity to unearth the deeper story that lies within you.

This kind of story is reliant on falling in love with, or hating, the central characters. We want to go along on this ride - for better or for worse - on the upward and the downward spirals. We will be enjoying the love / hate relationship we have with the main characters. We will also need to hold the larger vision of an epic tale.

Writing for the entertainment industry comes in two major forms. Literature-based is designed to be read alone. The other is performance-based, designed to be seen and/or heard. Either type of writing will be enhanced with a nature-based approach to the act of story creation. The techniques used will be like the ones in the other writing projects detailed here.

Developing Your Performance

If you are acting in front of a live audience or in front of a camera, a variety of skill sets will need required. The entire gamut of the actor’s process will available for our inquiry. What we will cover: Preparation for the actor. Rehearsal techniques. Character development. An array of improvisation based exercises to keep it all fresh and real. This work is discovery based. An ideal approach for the fast-paced world of production.

This is not your father’s approach to being a Keynote Speaker. We do not rely on anything external to bolster what you are going to share in your presentation. No relying on tech, or photo slide shows, or external tricks of any kind. We make sure that you have the inner power and the outer charm to take the whole room into the palm of your hand. After our work together, you will be ready to take your audience on the journey of your story. Your audiences may not remember the stats you quote - but will never forget how you made them feel during your talk. For some of our time together we will focus on your script. Yet, you being comfortable with an improvisational based approach to your Keynote talk, will be one of your most valuable assets.

The disembodied voice is anything but that. If it is only your voice that is being used in performance or recorded - then, the whole body-mind must be 100% involved. All the expression must ride on the sound current and not rely on non-verbal cues. In some ways, this work is more technical, and in other ways, it’s more freeing. Break the habit of ``left to right`` reading. Make your performances more engaging than ever before.

If your performance work is improvised, or scripted, ``Trust`` is the name of the game. Being present with what is happening is vital so that your essence can come across to your audience. We will work with the basic elements of story telling. Presence, contrast, expansion and contraction, and a host of other performance techniques. Working in this way will give you more freedom with either being on stage or in front of a camera.

Presence is the name of this game. If you have music to back you up or any other kind of specialty skill, this work is essential. This kind of performance work needs to be fluid enough to maintain ``the flow`` of whatever is going on in the moment. If you have ever been gripped with fear or paralyzed with stage fright, I can help to ease you back into your creative flow. And if you have a deep desire to be more expressive with your art form on stage or in front of a camera, this work will also ring true. Get lit up from the inside out and shine bright.

This work is very specific. It is not what you say, but rather how you say it. We will work on the many elements that make for a compelling and memorable set as a comedian or entertainer. Full body commitment. Perspective. Unique point of view. Then, the final step. We will drill down to the core of your essence to access your most personal and most organic material.
